Heron Lake church boosts worship at assisted living facility

HERON LAKE Members of Evangelical Lutheran Church received a grant of $2,000 from the Endowment Fund of the Southwestern Minnesota Synod (SW MN Synod) of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) for their Lakeview Worship Enhancement Project in 2019. The members completed their project in the spring of 2021, and dedicated the worship furnishings during a May 11 special service at Lakeview Assisted Living, Heron Lake.

The focus of the grant was to create a more worshipful atmosphere for church services at Lakeview by providing new worship furnishings, communion ware, a lectern with a speaker and large print hymnals. A team composed of Lakeview residents Tonya Scruve, Leila Fischer, Linda Heidebrink and the late Palmer Luitjens — along with The Rev. Karla Kirkeby, pastor for Prairie Star Ministries — met together and chose the altar, lectern and other items they hoped to purchase for the project, and then applied for the grant. The grant included the goals, who will be served, the number of people expected to participate, how the project would support the mission of the SW MN Synod and income sources.

Given the interruption of plans precipitated by COVID, the project was put on hold until the fall of 2020. At that time, Kirkeby sent letters to the congregations where the residents were members and informed them of the project, asking for assistance in reaching their financial goal. In addition to the $2,000 grant, members of Evangelical Lutheran Church made a gift of $754.17, and members of American Lutheran Church in Windom contributed a gift of $600.

The following furnishings and other items were dedicated: altar, altar linens, two candlesticks, candles and followers, altar cross, communion ware (including chalice, paten and trays for the cups), large print hymnals, five banners and a banner stand.

Dwain Koehn, a member of Evangelical Lutheran, assembled the altar, lectern, altar cross, banner pole and storage chest, and also equipped the altar and lectern with wheels for ease in using. Mary Hanson, also a member of Evangelical Lutheran, provided assistance to Kirkeby.
